FAQs

The term “tripartite” refers to something that is made up of three parts. In the case of ADA , there are three levels: the local dental society, the state or district dental society, and the national

American Dental Association. Each of these levels provide different benefits and resources to members, and work together to support dentists in their practice. Most dentists in the United States are tripartite members, meaning they belong to all three levels of the organization through their state or district dental society.

Dentists in the United States, abroad and dentist students of the United States and graduate students are eligible for its membership with a due date.

The membership year starts from January 1 and ends on December 31.

If you obtained your D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree in 2022, your first year of paying dues would be in 2023. During your first year, you don’t have to pay any dues. In the second year, you would pay 50% of the full national dues, and in the third year, you would pay the full national dues.

For recent graduates who pursue further education in a graduate or residency training program within five years of graduating from dental school, they are exempt from paying dues during the program. After completing the training, they can opt to join or continue with the Reduced Dues Program schedule.

After graduating, your membership with the American Dental Association (ADA) starts with a Provisional year. During this year, you will have access to all ADA resources to help you make important decisions as you start your career.

This Provisional year is free at the national level, and many state and local dental societies also offer this benefit. It is also known as the first year of the ADA’s Reduced Dues Program. Once you start practicing dentistry, make sure to contact your state dental society to fully utilize your ADA subscription at a local level.

Simply, if you want to renew your membership, you can do so by contacting your local dental society or the ADA directly. It’s usually a straightforward process. It’s important to maintain your membership without any gaps because some benefits, like insurance, are only available to current members. If there is a break in your membership, it could impact your eligibility for certain benefits, like a lifetime membership.

In order to transfer your membership to your new location, you should inform both your original local and state societies about your move. After that, get in touch with the local and state dental society at your new location. Your national ADA subscription will remain active, but it’s important to update your address, phone number, and email to ensure you continue receiving publications and other member communications.

You can update your information by logging into your My ADA account and making the changes there, or by contacting the ADA at 312-440-2500 or membership@ada.org.

To log into Ada, returning users should use their primary email address that is on file with ADA as their username. If you need to activate your account or retrieve your password, you can use the “Forgot your password?” link. For new users, you can create an account by using the “Create an Account” link to set up a free account.
